The Foreign Correspondents’ Clubs in Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong on Tuesday issued a joint statement urging mainland authorities to “ensure that journalists are protected from violence and intimidation”.
The statement cites incidents in July and August in which “international journalists have been threatened, harassed and even beaten while gathering news” on the mainland: including the beating of a journalist from Japan’s Asahi Shimbun, and two reporters from Poland and the United States being followed and intimidated in the middle of the night.
